We usually associate any heart disease an older person’s disease but this is not true. Nowadays, there are so many ways to bring about heart disease that even younger adults are seen suffering or have lost their life due to this disease. Now, you may thin, what could cause blockage of the heart and how does it happen?

An inflammation of the heart muscle is also known as Myocarditis. This happens due to a viral or bacterial infection that causes inflammation of the heart, and could lead to heart failure. An inflammation of the heart muscle could cause a blockage to the heart. This could be treated with cardiac rehab or this could even be reversible however there are times when the damage has been done and results to permanent damage.

Coronary Artery Disease or CAD happens when plaque or cholesterol build up in the arteries causes blockage. The arteries are responsible for supplying the heart with blood oxygen and when blocked could lead to a heart attack or even stroke.

Cardiomyopathy is an inflammation that can cause blockage of the heart and this could be due to infection of the heart muscle, a valve disease, artery disease. Often times, medication could treat this disease.

Lev’s Disease is when the electrical impulse that helps the heart beat is blocked due to calcifications. This is true more common in older people.

PVS or Pulmonary Valve Stenosis (a congenital heart defect) is the thickening of the valves, either 1 or more, in the heart thus causing severe blockage.

Atherosclerosis is the build up of fatty deposits into the artery. This then slows down the flow of blood to the heart.

Blood clots could also lead to heart blockage. The clots could happen where atherosclerosis is taken place. The heart attack could therefore be a sudden on-set such as spasms of the coronary artery. Stress, too much exertion, cold temperature, carbon monoxide or hypoxia – these could all affect the heart and could lead to heart attack.

Now that we know some of the causes of a heart blockage, it is important to note that there are some children who are born with heart problems. My sister was only 2 ½ years old when she suffered from a complete cardiac arrest brought about by a complete heart block also known as congenital heart disease. This is where the impulses or function/ventricular scope beats very slow and thus cannot give out the signal needed for a full functioning of the heart muscle. My sister needed a pacemaker to help the ventricular beat normally. She had her first open heart surgery at the age of 3. Since then, the pacemaker, or pacer, has been replaced every 8 – 10 years and recently has been longer thank goodness for modern technology. Whereas years before the surgery, an open heart, would prohibit my sister from leaving the hospital at a minimum of 1 week, just recently, she was given the OK to leave the hospital within 2 days!
