Home remedies for heartburn

Heartburn or indigestion is that burning feeling in your chest that, unless you’ve had heartburn before, is mistaken for a heart attack by some.

Heartburn occurs when you eat something that does not agree with your stomach. Heartburn is also known as acid reflux or acid back up.

My husband is plagued by heartburn and he’ll have every excuse ready as to why he is suffering from heartburn like: I laid down right after I ate or, it’s that garlic in that dish you made or I shouldn’t have eaten so late at night.

I can’t tell you the many nights when he’d wake up in the middle of the night burping his heart out! The indigestion is so bad that he would have a bottle of Tums by his bedside, and everywhere else like the car, suitcase, office desk – but I must say, it always happens late at night when he is in bed. It is believed that laying on your right side will not help but laying on your left side could help ease that burning. Besides knowing which side to lay on, are there any other home remedies for heartburn?

First and foremost, the best thing to do when you are suffering from indigestion is NOT to lay down. When you are laying down the acid backflow to the esophagus is greater so it’s best to be up on your feet.

My next door neighbor’s proven home remedy for heartburn is to use a teaspoon of baking soda in a room temperature glass of water. Her children will drink this straight and this will cause them to belch and, according to the kids, as soon as that belch is out they would feel so much better.

Some other home remedies for heartburn is to eat blanched almonds. It is advised to chew this almond 1 every 30 minutes. If you have no almonds in the house, eating a slice of raw potato is said to be an oldie but goodie among the home remedies for heartburn.

An old favorite among the list of home remedies for heartburn is the use of 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar plus 1 tablespoon of honey in a cup of warm water. Mix and drink.

Vegetables such as potatoes and carrots could be used to. Grate the potato and squeeze the juice by using a cheese cloth. Add twice as much water as to the amount of potato juice, mix and drink. As for the carrot, peel the carrot and chew, they say you have to chew it 30 times, and swallow.

If you indigestion is due to eating too much sweets, squeeze the juice from half a lemon into a cup of warm water. Add ½ a teaspoon of salt and drink slowly. Drinking a cup of peppermint tea is believed to give relief from heartburn as well. Or, try chewing a teaspoon of uncooked oat flakes, or maybe even 2 teaspoons. The saliva from chewing the oats is said to neutralize the acids in the stomach that causes heartburn.

Of all these remedies mentioned the most popular that a lot of people swear by is the use of baking soda. Take that teaspoon of baking soda, put it in your mouth followed by drinking a glass of room temperature, or warm, water. This is the best among the home remedies for heartburn.
