Chiggers, a part of the arachnid family, are mites that usually hosts on reptiles, birds, some mammals and even humans. The adult chigger is not the problem but it is the larvae that cause skin as well as health problems. How long do chigger bites last?
They are often found in grassy fields, along the lakes, creeks, streams, forest or anywhere where it is damp and with lots of vegetation.
They are usually “out” in the late summer or early fall. They jump on to the host from a tall grass or plant.
Chiggers need to feed in order to go through the cycle. They attach themselves to the skin and will feed for as long as a day to several days, about 3 to 4 days – they leave their victim and develop onto the nymph stage.
If the chiggers stay on our skin for days, how long do chigger bites last?
Chiggers actually jump onto our skin, they crawl and look for a warm, moist and tight area in our body and there they themselves to a pore or follicle opening. The actual chigger bite does not hurt humans, it is the reaction we have after, and that reaction to the bite determines how long chigger bites last.
Much like mosquitoes, the best suggestion to prevent chigger bites would be to wear clothing that would cover the skin. Spraying with insect repellant that contains DEET especially in the exposed area such as the ankles, neck, waist, wrists etc.. Avoid grassy areas and mow your lawn so as not to have overgrown grass for chiggers to live.
The determination of how long do chigger bites last depends on how quickly they are removed from the skin. Usually, chigger bites last for about a week to 3 weeks although sometimes they could linger for up to 4 months.
Chiggers can be removed from the skin by simply taking a warm shower. Soap and water does the trick – slight rubbing from a sponge or towel will easily remove the chigger.
Treatment of the bites themselves also determines how long do chigger bites last. The use of topical antihistamine creams and/or hydrocortisone ointments will help heal the bite sooner. To control the itching some people use oatmeal baths, any mentholated cream, tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil or cream… these will help contain how long do chigger bites last.
If the chigger bite area is infected be sure to see your doctor right away. Understand, that the bite itself may not have caused the infection but it’s the reaction we have that could cause it. The scratching of the area may be the cause of the infection which is why it is important to control the itch. As with flea and mosquito bites, the reaction to the chigger bite is different for each other. Some people may have to take antibiotics to get rid of the infection, some may need oral antihistamine. For severe allergic reaction, go to the nearest emergency room, or to your physician, ASAP for treatment.
