How long to cook a turkey in a convection oven?

This is a question that manages to polarize popular opinion quite significantly and whilst it may not sound like an especially significant or profound question to rise, the truth of the matter is that when it comes to Thanksgiving and Xmas, the question “how long to cook a turkey in a convection oven” is enough to incite people to violence!

The problem lies in the personal preference of the diners who will be actually eating the turkey meat, because generally speaking you can either enjoy succulent meat which is moist and bursting with flavor or you can crisp the meat in order to enjoy the crunchy texture of it. As a great man once said:
“You can’t please all of the people all of the time”

And never have truer words been spoken for the simple truth of the matter is that when it comes to how long to cook a turkey in a convection oven, you will have to go with a majority vote as opposed to pleasing everyone.

It is extremely regrettable that the two forms that turkey meat can and will achieve are so mutually exclusive but that it is the dilemma of it.

This is not the only reason that turkey meat is resented, for the question of how long to cook a turkey in a convection oven is typically uttered (although certainly nowhere in nearly as polite terms) just as the whole of the family has arrived and the cook is left trying to juggle all of the pressures of cooking. It should be noted that whilst it is entirely possible (and indeed safe!) to cook turkey meat directly from the freezer, it should be noted that it must be cooked for longer to ensure that it is cooked properly and that all bacteria are killed off.

How long to cook a turkey in a convection oven is a question that is entirely at the discretion of the cook because there are a number of variables to consider. First and foremost, the cook has to consider the actual physical weight of the turkey that they are cooking, if you are cooking a turkey which weighs two to three pounds then you need to ensure that you cook the meat for a minimum period of 3-4 hours. Use these figures as a base figure and then simply alter them on a pro rata basis as appropriate.
