List of foods that help lower cholesterol

Cholesterol is a waxy, soft substance found in the lipids in the bloodstream and the body’s cells. A healthy body needs cholesterol as it is used to form cell membranes, hormones and other bodily functions.

However, too much cholesterol and fats cannot be dissolved by blood alone and are transported to the cells by lipoproteins like the LDL(low-density lipoprotein) and HDL (high-density lipoprotein). A high level of cholesterol found in the blood called hypercholesterolemia is a risk for CAD which leads to heart failure.

So, if food is needed to gain cholesterol but we don’t’ want too much of it, what do we eat then and when do we know if the food is safe to eat? Should we be weary of all the foods we eat then? Better yet, what if we have a list of foods that help lower cholesterol to check with?

It seems easy enough to think that we should consume foods that lower cholesterol as in those foods that have no saturated fat. Check the packaging and if it says no saturated fat or low in saturated fat then that’s a go. Put it on the list of foods that help lower cholesterol.

Virgin olive oil should be added on the list of foods that help lower cholesterol. This increases the HDL (good cholesterol) which cleans the arteries of the plaque buildup.

Foods high in fiber as in green leafy vegetables and salads are highly recommended and should be added on our list of foods that help lower cholesterol. Add some whole wheat bread too in your diet.

Let’s write down a list of food that help lower cholesterol in a day.

In the morning, with breakfast being the most important meal of the day, start off with foods containing flax seed or soluble fiber. Oats, whole grain cereals or cereals with vitamin E and B6 and folic acid would be a good start. If your oatmeal or cereal does not contain flaxseed, you can go to the store and get flaxseed and add some on to your oats or cereal a list of foods that help lower cholesterol

For snacks try reaching for grapes, strawberries, blueberries, oranges apples. These fruits are filling, have antioxidants that not only help your insides but your skin as well. Also, try avoiding foods with animal fats to nuts. Nuts like pecans, walnuts, soy nuts even olives – these are fatty foods but contain vitamin E.

For lunch have some dishes with legumes, peas and lentils, dried beans, soy beans, salads – you can never have too much vegetable so this should definitely make it to our list of foods that help lower cholesterol.

Including fish in your diet is also good to add to our list of foods that help lower cholesterol. Fish have Omega 3 fatty acids such as tuna, trout, swordfish and salmon are good to have. You may include some lean meats and chicken too have Vitamins B6 and B12.

So does that mean that the foods that did not make our list of foods to help lower cholesterol should be avoided at all cost? The answer is too much of a good thing (meaning, foods that taste oh so good but are bad for us) is always not good. Limit your intake of those “bad” foods but don’t quit cold turkey just yet. Slowly but surely wins the race. If you like butter, try switching to margarine and use sparingly same thing goes to the use of other oils such as canola and other foods with unsaturated fats.
