Massage is a great way to make the muscles stronger for our dog because the movements are very similar to those that they would get during a workout session. The muscles are moving and they are stretching.

Along with a better quality of muscles comes the fact that your dog will have a more consistent breathing pattern. On the emotional level he or she will be stronger due to the touching. On the flip side though are dogs that don’t get exercise or massage. They develop problems with their breathing which is the result of the foods they consume becoming fat. Their metabolism is slow so they aren’t able to properly burn fat like they should.

This fat is going to build up over the course of time. As it does, their arteries will become clogged and that is going to have serious repercussions for both the joints and the heart. When a dog gets plenty of exercise though the metabolism increases so they burn calories instead of storing all they consume as fat. As a result they will be toned and they will have a healthier immune system too. This is even better when you combine both exercising regularly and massaging.

If your dog is lazy then you need to get them back on the right track. Massage can be what it takes so that they breathe normally, remove the build up of fluid in the joints, and their overall health is better. As a dog gets older he or she may not get the amount of exercise that they need. However, through messaging techniques that can all be improved upon.

Buy a rug or mat that is soft but firm for your dog to lie down on. If your dog is tiny then you can even just place them on your lap to complete the massage. To help your dog relax offer long strokes that are slow from the head to the tip of the tail. You will be able to feel your dog relaxing as you continue those movements. After a while start to gently scratch behind the ears then the face, chin, nose, and over the top of the head. You want to gently rub the ears between your forefinger and thumb as well.

Next you want to straddle your dog but don’t place any weight on it. With your three middle fingers make circle patterns from the neck to the shoulders and then over the chest.

Using those same three fingers, you want to move from the butt region to the thick. Slowing move from the thigh to the bottom of the leg until you reach their paws. You want to do both the front and the back of each leg this way.

Using your thumb and the index finger from each hand, place them on the spine and move towards the tail. Then you want to do this moving to the two thigh areas. Using long and slow strokes, you want to again move from the head to the tail.

If your dog has a problem with chewing or with barking, you want to gently massage the muzzle area. The best way to do this is to sit on the floor or even in a low chair. You want your dog to be between your feet. Use one hand to support the jaw of your dog and use the other to make small circle patterns on the muzzle.
